In this time of turmoil, it feels like so many people are focused on the negativity associated with the polar opposite of their own beliefs. Can we look at these opposite values and reframe them? Can we have gratitude for the things, people and events we love? Is it possible to have compassion for those with opposing viewpoints?
I have been paying attention to my own judgements, prejudices and preconceived beliefs about people places and things, and am choosing to listen with compassion to their stories. We all have a story and buried trauma. The ability to listen with compassionate ears is our choice, even when we are met with anger. It is our choice to meet that energy with more anger or to meet it with compassion and listen. Until we hear each other we are not truly able to have a conversation to understand, it is a lecture. I choose to enter a season of renewal. It is a time to build up our world. Can we choose to listen to understand?
What do you hear?
Listening is a magnetic and strange thing, a creative force. The friends who listen to us are the ones we move toward. When we are listened to, it creates us, makes us unfold and expand.
Beautiful words from a wise woman. Thank you, Cheryl.
I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this! I have been thinking similar thoughts, lately, and wondering why it is that so many people are unable to understand opposing viewpoints. Understanding doesn’t necessarily mean agree, right? But imagine what a more peaceful world we would live in if there was more kindness, increased listening, and more people were open to understanding the views of others. <3 This is a great post!
